When talking about reasons for doing this project, one theme Nancy returns to is sacrifice. The soldiers and their families make great sacrifices, while most of us make none. The endless writing of names is a way for Nancy to honor those who serve by making a small sacrifice.

She has been writing everyday since the project began May 28th 2007. She is writing the names chronologically starting with March 21st 2003. On Memorial Day she wrote for 14 hours. After 7 days and 36 hours she is now up to August 5th 2003, Letufga and Loyd. She has now written 302 names.

Farao K Letufuga was 20 years old when he died. He was from American Samoa and was the first Samoan to die in Iraq. Congressperson Faleomavaega said “He made the ultimate sacrifice so we may all enjoy freedom and live in peace. He is to be commended for his courage and service to our country. Ia fa’amaise atu le Atua ia te oulua ma le fanau, fa’apea le aiga atoa o lo’o maua i le loto fa’avauvau.”

David L Loyd was 44 years old when he died. A member of the Tennessee National Guard he is survived by his wife and 2 sons.
